In addition to these functions of Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros, the entity also assumes other activities within the area of the Multi-peril Agricultural Insurance, forest fire extinguishing accident insurance, nuclear insurance and others.
The Consorcio's participation in the coinsurance of the Combined Agricultural Insurance (CAI), started off in the 1985 Plan with a percentage of 39.68, a value that rose over the following years reaching a maximum of 49.65% in the 1987 Plan.
From this Plan onwards, the participation gradually started to decrease, until reaching 12.5% in the 1994 Plan and it maintained this percentage until 2006, when it dropped again to 10%, the value that it holds at present.
Reassurance Function
The reassurance premiums received by the Consorcio, which are linked to the direct insurance, have seen a sustained progression since 1980, (the first Insurance Plan), to 2005, when it reached the maximum. From this year onwards, the reassurance rates (percentage) started to drop, with the consequent decrease in the revenue due to premiums received by the Consorcio. However, from 2016, an upturn occurred in the amount linked to the growth of the direct insurance.
The historical evolution of compensations for the Consorcio's excess loss and reassurance premiums are shown in the following graph:
Please observe that in 1992, 1995, 1999, 2005, 2012, 2017, 2018, 2021 and 2022 the payments for excess loss shot up, coinciding with general claims made for drought, except in 2018 and 2022, where they were for hail and frosts, respectively, in line with the new climatic reality being faced by the System.
The greatest loss excess in the entire series corresponded to 2012, with compensation of 188 million euros being paid out. However, the estimates are indicating that this figure will be significantly exceeded in 2023.
