I am a foreigner and I want to contract a Compulsory Insurance policy for my vehicle that has a registration number from a country in the European Union or a third country, for the time that I am in Madrid. Can I contract the insurance and drive the vehicle with my driving licence?

In general, you can do it, whenever it is a Spanish vehicle and the driver has the regulation age to drive the vehicle to be insured in Spain.

If you are a citizen of the European Union you can contract the insurance with the driving licence issued in your country, whenever this permit authorises you to drive the type of vehicle for which you are going to contract the insurance and it is valid.

If you are not a citizen of the European Union, an international driving licence, authorising you to drive this type of vehicle will be sufficient.

If you are not a citizen of the European Union and you have a driving licence from your own country and you are not going to reside in Spain for more than six months, the licence from your country will be valid. In the case of residing for more than six months in Spain, the licence from your country will not be valid once these first six months of residency have passed and you should obtain a Spanish driving licence.
