4. What criteria are used to assess damage?
The process of evaluating claims for compensation takes the following factors into account:
- Verification of seismic intensity (IGN): The official macroseismic intensity published by the National Geographic Institute for the community where the affected property is located is consulted. If this intensity is Level III or lower, generally, a visit by an insurance adjuster is not considered necessary, and the claim is directly denied because the community is well below the threshold capable of causing property damage.
- Inspection and determination of the cause: If the intensity is higher than III, an insurance adjuster conducts an on-site inspection to verify the causal relationship, analysing the type of damage, its location, and its characteristics.
- Calculation of compensation: In cases where coverage applies, the loss adjuster conducts the assessment using market prices and taking into account the increase in repair costs caused by the seismic event.
- Policy limits: finally, any limitations on cover set out in the insurance contract apply, such as the exclusion of certain items, underinsurance situations, limitations on compensation for cosmetic damage, or the application of a deductible.
